Five Reasons Why The Very Rich Have NOT Earned Their Money
Image/photo
http://www.commondreams.org/view/2012/04/16
The wealthiest Americans believe they've earned their money through hard work and innovation, and that they're the most productive members of society. For the most part they're wrong. As the facts below will show, they're not nearly as productive as middle-class workers. Yet they've taken almost all the new income over the past 30 years

TclText - ticklish text editing by tony

Before I started using real hosting, with ssh access and vim on the server end, I managed my sites by writing them at home and uploading over ftp. Now, while this could be done with sftp or scp and vim, for the longest time, and sometimes now still, I will manage such tasks with TclText, my gro0vy, ticklish text editor, in tcl/tk, with a built-in ftp tool, and many other features.

Color Chooser

Image/photo

http://tonybaldwin.me/hax/doku.php?id=colorchooser

If you make websites, like I do, and you edit them in a real editor (i.e. vim), especially on a remote server over ssh, and not some atrociously convoluted, graphical "wysiwyg" monstrosity for writing web pages that creates bloated, nasty code, well, sometimes you need a hexcode for a color for your css style sheets, and stuff. What do you do?

For this purpose, I made ColorChooser, which is just a little gui tool for grabbing color codes.
Image/photo

Now, most of the work was really already done, tk having a color chooser tool, already. All I did was write a script to make it easy to call that tool up so you could find a color, then copy/paste the hex code to wherever you need it.

Finland

I am a 21 year-old student from Finland.
It makes me sad to hear how Americans are suffering.
Here, our taxes are high but we all benefit from them.
I grew up in the countryside and always had access to the same services that people in the city did.
My university is known around the world in my field and my education is not only free, but my government pays ME to go to university. Everyone has a right to this.
Everyone has a right to the best healthcare, there is no such thing as health insurance.
I am young now and able to take risks and pursue my passion because I will never have to worry about starving if I loose my job or my business fails.
I know that when I am old my state pension will be there for me so that I can enjoy my retirement.
We call this the Nordic Model, and under it we live well and our businesses are among the most competitive in the world. I am grateful to have been born a citizen of a country that cares for its people, and I hope that one day the USA will take example from us.

SCIENTISTS DISCOVER NEW ELEMENT!

#Oxford University researchers have discovered the heaviest #element yet known to #science.
The new element, #Governmentium (symbol = Gv), has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy #neutrons and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an #atomic mass of 312.
These 312 #particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called #pillocks. Since Governmentium has no #electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact.
A tiny amount of Governmentium can cause a #reaction that would normally take less than a second, to take from 4 days to 4 years to complete. Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2 to 6 years. It does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganisation in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places.
In fact, Governmentium's mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganisation will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes. This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This #hypothetical quantity is referred to as a critical morass. When catalysed with money, Governmentium becomes #Administratium (symbol = Ad), an element that radiates just as much energy as Governmentium, since it has half as many pillocks but twice as many #morons.

Kevin Drum
Quote of the Day: "We're Funding Both Sides of This War."
Image/photoTime's Mark Thompson posted an email exchange today with Douglas Wissing, author of Funding the Enemy: How U.S. Taxpayers Bankroll the Taliban, about his impression of the war after spending time on the ground in Afghanistan. Here's Wissing:
FM 3-24, the famous counterinsurgency manual authored by General David Petraeus that guides the U.S. military strategy in Afghanistan, states that partnering with a legitimate host government is an indispensable “north star” to a successful war. Instead, the U.S. is allied with an Afghan government that is largely ineffective and systemically corrupt.

....When I was embedded with U.S. troops in eastern Afghanistan, the soldiers started telling me that the U.S. government is wasting tens of billions of American taxpayer dollars on scandalously mismanaged aid and logistics contracts that end up financing the Taliban.

We’d be trundling through Taliban-controlled areas in armored vehicles, dodging ambushes and hitting IEDs, and the soldiers would be saying, “We’re funding both sides of this war.” It seemed preposterous at first. But as I dug into the story, officers, diplomats, and aid officials confirmed the rough outlines of the pernicious system. One sardonic US intelligence officer told me, “It’s the perfect war. Everyone is making money.”

....I have seen courageous American soldiers get increasingly frustrated and cynical about the war. Last summer a Marine colonel in southern Afghanistan told me there was low morale among the troops. He said, “On an operational level, the soldiers are saying, ‘I’m going to go over there and try to not get my legs blown off. My nation will shut this bullshit down.’ That’s the feeling of my fellow soldiers.” The marine officer said, “The juice ain’t worth the squeeze.”

Wissing believes that the continued American presence simply isn't doing any good. His advice: "I think the U.S. officials need to accelerate the withdrawal of the troops, and prepare to assist with the inevitable humanitarian crisis that is bound to overwhelm Afghanistan when we leave. We broke it. We need to help pick up the pieces."

Wisonsins Lawmaker says,"If you are being beaten, just remember the things you love about your abusive husband."

If you need any further proof that we are in the midst of a full-on patriarchal biblical-religious war on women, a Wisconsin lawmaker is happy to provide it.

According to Yahoo News, Wisconsin Rep. Don Pridemore helpfully suggests that, rather than divorcing an abusive spouse, you should try to remember the things you love about the guy while he is beating you up.
